Bacterial Canker and Blast

Over the past few weeks, there have been a high frequency of problems reported with bacterial canker and blast. Bacterial blast results in blighted blossoms and causes crop loss. Interestingly, when there is a high frequency of blast, the very similar disease of bacterial canker appears a few weeks later in young trees(we are starting to get reports of canker now). Both of these problems are complicated. They involve the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae, plant stress which is often mediated by nematodes, and the weather. P. syringae is an interesting bacteria. It lives naturally on plant surfaces as an epiphyte – meaning that it generally does not cause problems. During wet winters which create a favorable environment, bacterial populations increase and spread through the tree and orchard. At some point the population becomes large enough that it begins to invade plant tissues – starting with buds (bud drop), then flowers (blast), and finally bud scars and other openings which leads to bacterial canker. Tree health has a lot to do with the susceptibility to P. syringae infection. Generally, if the tree is healthy, infections rarely occur. Weak, young trees- usually three years or less- are susceptible to bacterial canker which can cause the loss of tree scaffolds or death. Mature orchards usually don’t exhibit bacterial canker symptoms, but rather have blast and bud drop problems. Orchards with severe problems are typically planted in sandy soils, which often tend to be acidic, hold less water and nutrients as well as being more conducive to plant parasitic nematodes. All of these factors, if managed improperly, can increase tree stress, increasing susceptibility. Leaf Spot on Padre, Other Varieties

Odd leaf symptoms on several different varieties have been reported across the valley. Predominantly found on Padre, they are found on the edge or the tip of the leaf. The lesions can be quite large, but tend to have a watersoaked margin and a yellow halo. In other varieties, the lesion has a shot-hole-like appearance, but fruiting bodies are not visible. Farmers have complained that fungicide spray programs have not been effective in controlling this disease.

Bacterial Spot Management

Almond growers and pest control advisors who attended our July bacterial spot field day in Manteca saw how devastating this new disease can be.  A map passed around at that field day showed two hot spots for the disease in our area.  The most severely affected area was between Highway 120 and the Stanislaus River in the Manteca/Ripon/Escalon area.  The second area was south of Turlock in the Delhi / Ballico area.

Almond Leaf Scorch

Written by Franz Niederholzer, UC Farm Advisor, Colusa/Sutter/Yuba Counties and Joe Connell, UC Farm Advisor, Butte County In the last month, several PCAs and/or growers have reported trees in almond orchards in the south Sacramento Valley with symptoms similar to those of almond leaf scorch (ALS) — a disease caused by the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa. Five of the six fresh leaf samples subsequently submitted to a lab for ALS evaluation tested positive for Xylella fastidiosa. Varieties that appear more susceptible in the field include Peerless, Sonora, Winters, Livingston, and Wood Colony.

Bacterial Spot – A New Disease of Almond in the San Joaquin Valley

Written by: Roger Duncan, Brent Holtz, David Doll and Themis Michailides Earlier this spring, we received reports from growers and pest control advisors that they had observed a few San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Merced County almond orchards with large amounts of amber-colored gum balls exuding from the hulls.  The damage has been predominantly on ‘Fritz,’ but there are reports of similar damage on ‘Monterey’ and ‘Padre.’  In some orchards, Fritz is severely affected while the Nonpareil and other pollinators are very clean.
